Followup to Sportsman’s Park Post and Blackie Schwamb

Tough matchup for the Cards in Game 4 of the World Series tonight as hard throwing lefty Derek Holland goes 8 1/3 and shuts them out. Followup to my previous post about Sportsman’s Park last week before Game 1 Found a great Living St. Louis piece on youtube about Sportsman’s Park.  It talks about the Cardinals and Browns, of course, but goes into detail about the neighborhood, the streetcars, the atmosphere of the park, and even the knot hole gang.  There is lots of great footage of the park, the neighborhood, and especially Stan...

World Series Starts Tonight — Reflection on Sportsman’s Park

With the Cardinals advancing to the World Series for the 3rd time in 7 years and the 18th time overall in 2011 my interest in Cardinal history has been reawakened.  Something I’ve long thought about was the previous home of the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Browns of the American League.  Many St. Louisian’s don’t realize that the Browns left St. Louis after the 1954 season for Baltimore.  They subsequently changed their name to the Orioles to distance themselves from the losing ways they displayed while in St....

2720 Cherokee Live Music Venue

I went to a concert at 2720 Cherokee Friday night and thought I would post about it since it is a relatively new edition to both the STL live music scene and the Cherokee streetscape.  The venue is located 2 blocks west of Jefferson in a terra cotta 2-story building on the south side of Cherokee Street.  Technically this is in the Gravois Park neighborhood but Cherokee is the dividing line between Benton Park West and Gravois Park on this side of Jefferson.  This is just about 2 blocks down from some of the Mexican restaurants that Cherokee...

City Museum Founder Bob Cassilly Passes Away Suddenly

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 in Architecture, Downtown, St. Louis Culture, St. Louis News | 48 comments

I read the news late last night that Bob Cassilly had died suddenly in an accident at his Cementland project in the Baden/Riverview area on the far north side of St. Louis City.  I wanted post about it because there are few people who have contributed more to the culture of St. Louis than Bob Cassilly has.  Cassilly is an accomplished sculptor, artist, restauranteur, and businessman.  He is most known for being the founder and owner of the City Museum and for his Cementland project on the north side.  He has also contributed several...

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 in Benton Park, Downtown, Soulard, St. Louis Culture, St. Louis News, Street Festivals | 0 comments

Lots of events going on this fall weekend in St. Louis! I made it Downtown both Saturday and Sunday for the Taste of St. Louis and then the Cardinal game Sunday afternoon. The weather was absolutely beautiful and thousands of people showed up both days. Quite a few people made there way to The Taste before and after the baseball game. There was also a 3PM Rams game and many people stopped in before that. The Taste of St. Louis is a great 3 day event (Fri – Sun) that takes place at Soldier’s Memorial each Fall. Soldier’s...

Stopped By The Balloon Glow In Forest Park Friday

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 in Forest Park, St. Louis Culture, Street Festivals | 0 comments

I stopped by the balloon glow in Forest Park on Friday.  This is the warm up to the balloon race that takes places each fall in Forest Park.  All the participants of the race set up their balloons in central field in Forest Park and between 7–8:30 people can come by and see the balloons up close and personal.  Its interesting because for the balloons to stay inflated they have to continuously fire  and this illuminates everything around it for a few seconds.  With dozens of balloons all over the field it creates quite the light...

I went to the St. Nicholas Greekfest over labor day weekend and it was a great time!  We actually made a couple of trips to sample as much Greek food as possible.  We also sat and watched the live music for quite a while.  St Nicholas is a Greek Orthodox Church located in the Central West End Neighborhood of St. Louis City. Brothers Notorious: The Sheltons

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 in St. Louis Books, St. Louis Culture, St. Louis History | 0 comments

Reading another book about St. Louis area organized crime and wanted to post about because its been a great read so far.  The book focuses on the Shelton Gang who dominated gambling and bootlegging in East St. Louis and Madison County in general during the 20’s and early 30’s.  The Sheltons were active from the 20’s through the late 40’s but they were forced out of the East Side in the mid-30’s and made their way back to Wayne County and eventually forced their way into Peoria and dominated that area for a...
